One-on-One Mentoring

One Mentoring Relationship at a Time

One-on-One Mentoring at Youth Guidance provides the opportunity for an even deeper connection between a child and a caring, trusted adult. Volunteer mentors introduce mentees to new opportunities and help them achieve their goals.

Within the past year, Youth Guidance mentors have taken mentees to McKee Botanical Gardens, LaPorte Farms, the Vero Beach Ballet, the Indian River County Firefighter’s Fair, and much more.

Our Approach

When implementing One-on-One Mentoring, Youth Guidance follows 6 evidence-based standards and 23 benchmarks, developed by MENTOR and published in Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring.

Before becoming a One-on-One Mentor at Youth Guidance, volunteers must complete onboarding, pass a Level 2 Background Check, and spend at least eight weeks volunteering in our Group Mentoring programs. This allows volunteers the opportunity to get to know the children and discover common interests.

3 Keys to One-on-One Mentoring

STRATEGIC
MATCHING

Before a match is made, we have a meeting with the parent or guardian, child, prospective mentor, and the Youth Guidance team.

CONSISTENCY
AND ENGAGEMENT

Mentors are required to spend at least two hours per week or eight hours per month with their mentee.

ENGAGING ALL
STAKEHOLDERS

We schedule monthly check-ins with the mentor, mentee, and parent to ensure the one-on-one relationship is on the right track.
